Hotels and public houses – with names such as Hamilton House, Foreman House and Hoffman House – were placed a mile apart on the pike. It was on this road that the famous Conestoga wagons, with their white canvas tops, traveled. Water was also used to power factories producing wool and sorghum syrup. There is also a Caernarvon Township in Lancaster County.Īlthough water power was at a premium, several mills – including clover, oil, and feed – did spring up in Caernarvon. The township was carved from part of Chester County, and when Berks was formed in 1752 a portion of the township was granted to the new county.
